Zirconium or Porcelain Crowns?

Zirconium or Porcelain Crowns?

Full veneer crowns can be both zirconium or porcelain. Zirconium material is a white alloy. Zirconium-based porcelain is superior to other dental materials due to its biological compatibility and breaking resistance. Porcelain material is porcelain bonded to a supporting structure of metal creating a stronger restoration than porcelain used alone.

If you want a very white result, you can choose zirconium. Also zirconium is more popular and trend is in this direction. But if you do not want a “whiter than white” result and if you want a natural appearance, you can safely choose porcelain and you can get the result you want.

Material is different. Zirconium is zirconium with porcelain. More soft. Porcelain is porcelain with metal structure under, a little bit dull looking. If you want for example a Hollywood smile, zirconium is suitable. If you are okay with dull looking, it gives natural appearance, you can choose porcelain. But most of the smile makeovers are done with zirconium. We recommend zirconium.

Zirconium material is a substructure material and is essentially a metal. And porcelain is made on this infrastructure material. Metals that look gray on the inside have contents such as nickel, chrome, cobalt, and because of their colors, they even give a more matte appearance to porcelain.

As property of metal supported porcelain teeth; it can be used as a bridge in long toothless areas. As example, if you have a gap consists of more than 2 teeth, metal supported porcelains are preferred for bridge work since it can maintain solid structures and long-term resistance.

Above is the difference between zirconium and other metal substrate porcelain veneer teeth. There is no scientific difference in terms of health.

What is the Difference of Zirconium Veneer?

There are differences between metal-supported porcelain veneers and zirconium veneers. Zirconium is actually a white metal and carries many properties of the metal concept. It is aesthetically superior and biocompatible and have a better appearance than porcelain teeth in terms of natural appearance. Zirconium is a mineral metal with a high degree of resistance and performance, so it is used in dentistry for excellent quality dental prostheses. Zirconium and porcelain (which is combined with zirconium) are 100% biocompatible with oral cavity, oral mucosa and other tissues of the mouth so there is no risk of any allergie.

Of course, veneer feature, compatibility with natural tooth and gum harmony are very important. Zirconium veneer is not allergic since it is a tissue-friendly material. It is more advantageous in terms of general body health compared to metal-supported porcelain crowns. Despite the cost seems to be more than porcelain tooth veneer, it will not be much considering the long-term results. With porcelain veneers, there may be a gap between the tooth and the veneer. This can cause food debris to accumulate, natural teeth to decay, and smell in the mouth.

Metal supported porcelain veneers can be applied to all teeth. They are preferred especially in the back teeth with high chewing force. They are used in damaged teeth, especially after root canal treatment or after large fillings, as they are resistant to strength. Another reason for preference is that they are more economical than other veneer types. Although gum fit is not as ideal as zirconium veneers, they are still preferred in posterior tooth deficiencies.
